2007 Mock Drafts

Here's what I wrote for a mock draft at sportscolumn.com:
With the 3rd pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, the Atlanta Hawks select Mike Conley, Ohio State University.

Chad Ford's tier system definitely swayed me on this one. Al Horford has a chance to be a special NBA player, but so does Mike Conley. Conley fills a need more than Horford, though. The Atlanta Hawks have been without a true point guard since forever (apologies to Speedy Claxton and his various injuries). Mike Conley is not only a great point guard, but a great leader and absolute professional. He has a chance to come into this team and be a vocal leader. He's only 19, but he's not that much younger than everyone else in the starting lineup. He won't start immediately, but the first time Speedy's knee gets sore, he will become the Hawks' starting point guard.

I feel like we've all been bamboozled by Billy Knight and his complete dismissal of point guards in the draft. We've got a chance to get a ton of value by drafting a rookie point guard that can step in and play on the NBA level- who could possibly be a leader on this team. Shelden Williams, if healthy, can still provide the defensive presence that Al Horford would bring to this team. Horford is absolutely going to be a star, but so is Conley. I've said it a thousand times, but when your team is a few years away from peaking you've got to stay young and cheap- bringing in Mike Bibby might get us to the playoffs next year, but in 3 years we won't have any cap room and Bibby will be 42 years old!

I feel like Knight is going to draft Horford, which would definitely be an admission that Shelden Williams was what everyone not named Billy Knight thought he was- a 10/10 role player, not someone you spend the #5 pick on. Horford becomes the first alternate for center, and coupld possibly start. The guards will be Speedy and Joe "Kid Dy-no-mite" Johnson, Josh 2 is definitely a starter, and probably Sexual Healing and Dr. Z. Horford rotates with the big 3, Childress with the 2 guards and Josh 2.

The drama with Acie Law has played out exactly like Shelden last year, with Acie unexpectedly withdrawing from other workouts after working out with the Hawks. Last year we heard rumors that Knight made a promise to Law, this year we actually have not- people are just assuming Knight has guaranteed Law that 11. I really like Acie Law, but I am not sure he can be a true point guard. I am positive that I don't like the tipping of the hand. It kills off interest in trades, but maybe Knight just doesn't care about them.

I would be pretty happy with Horford / Law, or even Horford / Noah (betting on Speedy with that one). Conley / Noah would be my absolute dream, though. Or just Kobe.
