Vince Carter is still a Punk
Atlanta took down the Nets last night in overtime. VC missed a monster 3 at the end of overtime to give us the win. The refs completely blew a few calls, including a backcourt violation by the Nets in the last minute of regulation- even Steve Smith knew it was karma. I'm not sure how the Nets are a good team. I guess it's just Jason Kidd. When they shot really well they look good, but outside of Jason Kidd there isn't much offense. Vince Carter jacking up 3's from 30 feet isn't a game plan, unless he's making them (and he made a few). That game-winner he missed was close to 35 feet, and it missed by less than an inch.
Popeye (Josh Smith) looked like a star last night with some HUGE 24 footer, including a loop-de-loo at the end of regulation to tie it, although it looked like a 3 from my couch... Josh 1 (Childress) is beginning to look like a 6 seed. He is playing aggressively, taking it to the basket and getting to the line like a true NBA superstar. He still plays for the Hawks, unfortunately, and doesn't always get the calls even when they are obvious. He deserves a better nickname than Josh 1, and I'm leaning towards Mowgli AKA Man-Cub.
Vince Carter wins the goat award for going 9-24, although it almost went to Al "Sign and Trade" Harrington AKA S.A.T. With 15 seconds left and 8 on the shot clock with the Hawks up by 2, Al drives to the hole, doesn't get off a shot, and loses the ball out of bounds. I don't know how his shooting percentage isn't lower, because he ends up flying off his feet with the ball out of bounds more than any other player taking it to the hole. I say "it almost went to", because the Brilliant Steve Smith pointed out that S.A.T. was going to kick it to Marvin, but Sexual Healing cut to the basket looking for a board. A rookie mistake to be sure, but points go to the most observant Hawks' broadcaster, Mr. Steve Smith.
I'd like to use this section to highlight some behavior from the Milwaukee game three nights ago. Joe Johnson made a poor cross-court toss and it went right to Harrington's man. Harrington and his guy both broke towards the basket, but the other guy was sprinting and Al was jogging. So the guy gets ahead of Al, who then promptly jumps up to block the shot, but only half raises his arm. So he wasn't actually trying to play defense, he just wanted it to look like he thought about playing defense and decided against it. I know Joe Johnson AKA Kid Dy-no-mite shares some of the blame, but S.A.T. completely gave up on the play, the team, and me as a fan. He is a no good punk and I would like an explanation. Just because your teammate is at fault doesn't mean you get to pout. You're getting paid crazy money and I want to see some hustle. If Coach Woodson saw the play, I wonder how he would deal with it. If I were a coach that would be a one game suspension, I think, but maybe they are just letting S.A.T. play to increase his trade value. I would be shocked if that were actually the case, but it is a business.
For those of you counting at home, the Hawks were 1-1 when Salim Stoudamire did not play.
