2006 NBA Draft Hawks Recap

I'm hoping this is part one of my draft recap. The Hawks took Shelden Williams at #5. No trades, no Head, no nothing. Houston, why would you not want Brandon Roy?

Point Guard update: Phoenix just took Rondo at #21. Marcus Williams IS STILL ON THE BOARD, although the Knicks got booed off the stage when they didn't take him at 20. New Jersey has the next two picks so I can assume one of them will be for Marcus.

I can't believe that nobody was willing to trade down. Our GM is useless.

Update: The Hawks, with the 33rd pick in the 2006 NBA Draft... select another 6'9" Forward named Solomon Jones from South Florida. Everyone in the booth talks about how the Hawks need to bolster their front line- um, I thought that was the one thing we didn't need bolstering? Seriously, how are we going to have room on the roster for all of these forwards? Does Josh Smith not have a future with this team? Jones, a senior, seems like an older version of Josh 2 with less NBA experience. Unless some massive trade involving half our team is in the works, that was probably the worst possible pick that Knight could have made.

And the kicker? KEVIN PITTSNOGLE IS STILL ON THE BOARD. One of my all-time favorite college players, I don't care about his skillset- he should be our starting center immediately. At least he would be our first substitute at Center instead of John Edwards, the Whitest NBA Player Ever (perhaps). And if you're gonna take a flyer, why go after a different position with P.J.Tucker?

Second Update: Wonderful ESPN interview with Billy Knight, who doesn't sound like a man who just got what he wanted. He talked about how the Hawks points-in-the-paint defense was second worst in the league last year, so that's why we need Shelden Williams. Can anyone confirm this stat? The best I found was that in terms of points scored against us by forwards and centers, the Hawks were around the league average. If we are next to last in overall points in the paint, I think that points to the hundres of times I watched an opponents PG cross over Tyronn Lue, sending him into coma, and then hitting an open layup. Seriously, point guards put up huge games against us last year. We need a defensive presence, but there's nothing Knight can say that justifies taking Shelden at #5. He even tried to say something about how he was happy that Shelden wasn't taken. Do other NBA execs go home laughing about him? I don't know. I'm going to bed sullen.
