Billy Knight Awakens from his Slumber

The Atlanta Hawks got off their butts today and tried to sign Sam Cassell. They failed. Sam took less money to stay with the Clippers- can't really blame him, as that team may be on the verge of winning the championship (with a little bit of luck). Too bad, the Hawks could really have used him.

Now that Sam's off the market, it looks like we're going all out after Mike James. The Hawks can give Mike more money than most of the other teams, and he would instantly make this team better. He was one of only two players on the Raptors to put up positive net numbers, in what was really his first year as the main man on a team. He's a proven scorer, but he can dish it and play defense. And at 31, he becomes the oldest man on the team. He only has 4 years in the NBA, after spending some years in the French league. And last year he was an offensive focal point of one of the worst teams in the NBA? His turnovers were high, but his shooting percentage was pretty good for the team he was on. Anyone who can perservere the way he has gets a lot of respect from me- he could be a great fit for this team.

I can't say enough how impressed I am that Knight went out and offered Cassell a contract. That should help him get a lot of fans on his side, and he would have been so good for this team. James probably would have given the Hawks a better veteran presence, but I think Speedy is closer to the type of player at point the Hawks need. I think they need the passing and the defense more than the scoring and driving. I'm pretty happy with Speedy.

I completely agree. It would be nice if we can count on Speedy to nail open 3 pointers (unlikely, based on his poor 3-point percentages last year and every other year), but we've already got a point guard that can do that- Salim Stoudamire, who happens to be useless. Speedy Claxton is the exact opposite of Salim- he is Bizarro Salim.
